My mates 'babies'
Vauxhall Firenza HPF one of only 204 and only done 38,000 miles. 131BHP with 5 speed ZF box, tame by today's standard but pretty damn nippy in 1976
And his Vauxhall Sportshatch, originally Vauxhall's own car and registered VML1, possibly driven at some point by Wayne Cherry who designed them both and sporting a twin cam 16 valve and 5 speed Getrag, one of only 197.

Used to have a Magnum 2300 which after modding basically it was a HPF underneath and same with the engine as my mate used to work on the dyno's at Luton back in the day. Also was fitted with the overdrive box from a VX/490.

Magic stuff.
I know who your mate is of course as I started the club, the Droop Snoot Group, for both those lovely machines back in 1980, and I'm still the club President. I've ridden in the twin cam Hatch too and it certainly moves!

yeah back than those figures where as we now look at cars that have 250+ bhp, i do like a proper oldie and how sick would one of them be with an z20let swap??? i know it will drop it's value but what a hell of a sleeper would it be with all that power going to the rear axle... i see loads of fun right there.

Back in the day ago there was a Chevette twin cam that was fitted with a turbo and went off the scale at John Noble's rolling road in Chesterfield. Admittedly at the time his rolling road only went to 300hp but it asks the question, do you really need a Z20LET? (OK it might be a bit more reliable at that output lol) The 2.3 slant four is incredibly strong being half a V8 and the torque is impressive and I love torque!

Ofcourse not but you can get parts for a Z20LET a lot easier and possibly cheaper than for a hybrid turbo setup on the 2.3 slant four.

You are right of course, finding parts for a slant four these days is like platting fog, but I grew up with them and me and my mate used to race a Firenza and I built the engines so I know them pretty much inside out and although they are a big ungainly lump I love them to bits. They are simple and powerful (for their time). I would love to get hold of one of the original V8 prototypes and see what it could put out because it would fit straight in. The prototype 3750 V8 put out 195hp on its first run without any development in 1965 when the Rover 3500 V8 (or Buick if you like) was 150hp so it had definite potential.
Also the fact that the Lotus 907 was more or less the same engine but made from aluminium and that the Lotus V8 has the same engine mount positions is also interesting.
