Removing a crankshaft pulley bolt

I'm after some advice with removing a crankshaft pulley and seal.


Friend has a 207 1.4 petrol.

I've located the oil leak and it's dropping from the crankshaft seal.

I don't have a impact wrench, but wondered if it was possible to use a braker bar to get the bolt off. Or if there was a way you have to remove them.

it should come off if you use a breaker bar with a long extension on it so you can apply more force, granted you've got space to use the extension and have locked the flywheel so the crankshaft doesn't move.... sticking it in gear might help but if it has never come off before it usually means you'll have to use locking tools.

Can overfilling the oil cause crankshaft seals to leak? I'm having a debate with a person. He's saying no.

Basically his brother balled up and put 5litres of engine oil in a car that's suppose to only have 2.5-2.75 lites. The car was driven about 4 miles until he realised. He drained the oil and tbh it looked like more than 5litres were in the system .

Now he has a oil leak. I've taken a look at it and cleaned it all with brake cleaner and you can start to see it leaking from the front crankshaft pulley. (Drives the aux belt) so I suspect it's the seal. But without taking the pulley off we can't confirm it.

To to clear the argument up. Can to much oil blow crankshaft seals. I've said yes.

you are right the system get's pressurised by the oilpump while driving... to much oil will add to much pressure and because it can't go anywhere the seals can pop... usually on the crankshaft and behind the flywheel... but i have seen it come out of other places like the sparkplugs, rocker covers, and even cause so much damage that it broke the headgasket... (30 years of working on cars makes you see loads of weird and wonderful things)

Mate, I've never seen anything like it. Last week when he told me what his brother done I was shocked. Because it was only 2 days before he done this he had the head gasket done.

I said get new spark plugs and a new air filter and I'll change them. The plugs wasn't that bad tbh there were dry surprisingly. But the airfilter, my god it was swimming in oil. All the breathers were caked in oil and needed cleaning

Head gasket seems to be fine luckily but time.will tell.
