    Cool Socket under ashtray

Yo guys, was sitting in the obligatory Surrey traffic jam going home tonight (looking at the old Vectra B 1.8 LS in front and thinking that those who prefer Vectra B probably also have a desire for swirly 1970s orange and brown carpets in their front room), when I happened to pull out the ashtray in my complete boredom (4 miles in 25 minutes is not best use of my 3.2V6 engine).

Anyway sitting under the ashtray is a socket which looks like something interesting should be plugged into it - any ideas what it is for ??????

    cheers Andy

As barny's post at the same time as your's Gavin - it's where they plug in the diagnostic computer (Tech 2) to check for errors etc and reprogram anything.

Surely it also has to provide info via OBD II under Euro law? Not as many features as Tech 2 but you should still be able to get quite a bit of information!

Not sure what you mean? What Euro law are you meaning?

It's an ODB II system so any ODB II reader will read certain data. The Tech 2 will let you do anything that you need to on the car.

Euro Law was that any car built after 2001? had to provide a standardised interface so that the monopoly of servicing / fault finding on cars could be taken from main dealers.

Tech 2 allows you to do other stuff like wheel size changing for the speedo but these are extras if you like. A standard OBD II cable will only cost about £20-30 and there is plenty of freeware software around to read the data. Works out a lot cheaper for the DIY-er to have rather than tech 2!

Of course, not recommending anyone other than VX plugs into the socket but if you did.......
