Default EML on Error P0597 - limp mode.

    Hi there.
    So....
    Vectra C facelift 07 plate 1.8 z18xer. Petrol.
Was driving home from work, EML came on and engine was spluttery and almost in limp mode.
Managed to get it home...did the pedal test and it game me 10 flashes, pause,5 flashes, 8 then 7.
So I googled it and came back with thermostat control.
Heaters working fine and don't know why it would do make it go in limp mode...

If anyone can help me id be so grateful.

I originally though it was coil pack and nearly panicked and forked out £150!

    Thanks in advance.
    Steve.

    Just an update...
I did check my guess and none were gone.
However, now when I start the car there is a strong smell of what smells like woodstain/creosote. :/
I thought just a lorry went past or a neighbour was staining his fence but no.
    I'm so stuck.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

The thermostat has nothing to do with the interior heating mate... it might be stuck open and with the heat of today the ecu must have kept the speed down to prevent the engine from overheating...

Replace the thermostat... it is on the engine.

    Hi there. Thanks for replying.
So the thermostat is definitely the culprit? Is it something a novice can get to to replace?
Will get some garage quotes today.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Well i would say: if you don't have any OBD2 fault reader... either request a forum member that lives nearby to read out the car first or have a garage run diagnostics first...
the error you've got could be as simple as a corroded connector, a coolant leak,a short in the wiring to the thermostat, or the thermostat is stuck....

the reason why i said replace the thermostat is because usually it is a stuck thermostat, and if you don't know when it was last changed, 9 out of 10 times it is the thermotat... but it can be any of the other causes i just pointed out.

AFAIK you should be able to replace the thermostat but i don't own a 1.8 vvt so can't tell you were it is located... but it isn't a hard job to replace, thermostats are usually placed at an easy accessible place.

    Hi again.
Sorry about not having my actual location set.
I'm in a town called Wisbech, Cambridgeshire.
So it could be any one of those things?
Not having any mates who are mechanics nearby is a pain! Haha.
If not ill have to limp it to nearest garage and get them to run diagnostics on it I guess.
    Thanks for the replies.

yes it could be any one of those things i mentioned earlier... but by replacing the thermostat you hae to disconnect anything that is connected to it so 9 out of 10 times by replacing it you'll sort out any of the other problems... if the connector is corroded you'll see it and basically a quick clean out and some electrical contact cleaner will clear that out.. if it is a short in the cable, by removing it from the thermostat you'll move the cable and notice there is something not right, some electrical tape is enough to isolate the break within the cables isolation... and if the thermostat itself is stuck by replacing it you'll have that sorted out... because of how they are build you can't fix them but they need replacing so you'll need to source a replacement (get a genuine vauxhall one because there are some bad quality ones being sold and basically they get stuck quickly) also if you replace it yourself you'll need to get some coolant to top up the reservoir again as you'll loose some coolant doing this job...

so yeah replacing it usually touches all the points mentioned... but it might just be a little thing like the cable short or connector corrosion...
but here is of how to replace it:

Hi north pole. That video shows it is pretty simple to change it.
    Even for me!
I'm at work til 230 so will get straight on it and check the sensor and everything when I get home.
Will update with my findings if that's ok?
Thanks for your patience. I am a proper novice when it comes to cars!

You will probably need to replace the brittle plastic housing as well.
