    Default Vectra noob

Hi all. I've inherited a 2004 Vectra - 2.0 DTI Energy model recently and I'm looking at making some improvements to keep it running as long is possible/worthwhile.

I figured I'd start with the MOT advisories and go from there...

    • 1. Nearside Rear brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened (3.5.1i)
    • 2. Offside Rear brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened (3.5.1i)
    • 3. Rear Brake pad(s) wearing thin (3.5.1g)
    • 4. Nearside Front brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened (3.5.1i)
    • 5. Offside Front brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened (3.5.1i)
    • 6. Nearside Headlamp deteriorated but light output not reduced (1.7.5a)
    • 7. Offside Headlamp deteriorated but light output not reduced (1.7.5a)
    • 8. Nearside Front Anti-roll bar linkage has slight play in a ball joint (2.4.G.2)
    • 9. Offside Front Anti-roll bar linkage has slight play in a ball joint (2.4.G.2)
    • 10. Front Sub-frame corroded but not seriously weakened (2.4.G.1)
    • 11. Rear Sub-frame corroded but not seriously weakened (2.4.G.1)
    • 12. Nearside Rear Tyre worn close to the legal limit (4.1.E.1)

Rear tyre has been replaced so number 12 done, but car definitely needs tracking/balancing.

I've ordered new drop links for the front - will that cure 8&9?

I've ordered new headlight assemblies rather than try to buff/repair the current ones as the nearside one also has no seal on the back and has condensation inside - and I got a good price for a set, so that's 6&7 sorted... looking at adjusting the headlight height too so I can actually see some of the road.

Is it time for new pads and discs all around according to 1-5?

Also, the car hasn't been serviced in probably 10 years... not even an oil filter change from what I know. Where is best to get a service done, if it's worth it?

Sorry about the long 1st post, but hopefully you can all offer a little help/advice

As above. Those are all small problems. Routine stuff. I'd do a couple of oil changes in quick succession, if I were you. Brakes are cheap - droplinks too.

Cheers both. So all worth doing then!?

Can I/do I need to do anything about corroded sub-frame?

Also, whilst I'm thinking of it. The cruise control no longer works. Is this because the service light and amber engine management light are on? Definitely used to work...

Sand back any rust that can be seen. Then use some rust neutraliser. Prime. Paint.

I would find out why the check emgine light is on before doing anything else.

But as said above all simple things a sunday morning session should see put right.

Guessing I need a diagnostics check for that?

What's best (easiest to use) OBD2 to get?

I have tech2 can do a diagnostic check for you. Where in Stockport are you?

You can also use the pedal test which will flash up the fault codes. As long as you can count, you can then lookup what the codes mean. Not a substitute for a tech2 but will give you a poke in the right direction.

Also, look at AutoVaux for your brakes. I was quoted something ridiculous by Vauxhall to do my discs and pads, got the parts for next to nothing from Autovaux - www.autovaux.co.uk - just need to find time to fit them now!

if you have a andriod phone and a ELM327 BT dongle (version 1.4 or higher) you can use that and this app or this one... the first one will erase the engine codes not the rest the second will show you everything but unless you buy it won't erase anything... but it will give you the right codes... i have been using both to find engine problems and successfully sorted them out.
