Default 2k a month motorway, my best diesel option?

I may be changing jobs soon, so in the near future I may well be going from a 14 mile a day commute to a 96 mile a day commute.

The Astra I have at the moment is fine for the 1000 miles a month I do, but to be honest I'd rather be mauling the M1 with a Vectra C.

I'll probably be aiming for a 05 or 55 plate Vectra C, probably SRi spec, and with either the 1.9CDTi-150 or the V6 CDTi. I don't like slushboxes, so it'll be a manual box.

Is the V6 CDTi much harder on fuel than the 1.9-150? I don't mind a few MPG less if I get more smiles, and I like the ability to move on quickly when required.

    To recap:

Is the V6 much better than the 1.9 for motorway work?
Is the V6 much harder on fuel than the 1.9?

So what sort of milage are the V6 CDTi drivers getting on a motorway run?

I get around 50 to the gallon from the Astra, but they're noisy, bumpy, rattly miles and I don't think I could cope with a 100 of them a day.

I get 48 (according to the onboard computer) out of my 1.9 150, and thats driving sensibly.... Can't comment on the v6 tho'

Its also cheap to buy - I paid £8K for my 2005 54reg sri satnav with 40K from a non vauxhall main dealer.

Its a great car to drive!

    What he just said!

The 1.9 is a good bit better on mpg than the V6, but the V6 will do the mileage much more smoothly. Decisions!!

I'm getting about 530 miles from the 1.9 150 Vectra c, mainly short runs in rush hour, 40 miles aday,

On good steady runs I could get 650 from a tank (all long motor way runs) I did Portsmouth to Nottingham and back once in a day and still had 1/2 a tank of fuel left .

I've not driven a V6 to compare , can't see the point, higher servicing cost, more road tax, less mpg !!

80 miles a day across the M62 (ie a slog through traffic most days) is giving me about 37mpg (v6 auto).
Not done any long runs yet as I've only had it 2 weeks.

I was doing about 1200 a week in my V6 before they gave me a cr**ppy 1.8. i get typically 40ish with very mixed driving never below 39. i always keep the page on the screen while I drive and 40 is my target. Anything better is a Brucey Bonus. And BTW the 1.8 is getting about the same without all the comforts.

40ish is what I get from my 3.0 auto on a daily 80 miler. Not to shabby and very smooth! It's for sale too, see cars for sale threads for piccys (shameless plug).
