Default Wife's stolen the Vectra - who can help with her Astra ?

Last week she broke down - wouldn't accept a push start from me, and I had the RAC out ( well an 'associate' independent )

Basically the car just died as she pulled away from a junction. Engine's the same Z18XER as my Vec, All the dash lit up, and when you tried to start it got click, click, click - strangely though the lights don't dim. RAC said battery, and as it was original on a 57 sounded likely and changed it.

Darn thing's just done it again, and started first time with a jump from the Vectra. I tested the alternator and was getting 14.1v

Oh - no codes logged BTW

    Any ideas ?

Battery is good and the alternator is good, then its your starter motor.

But would a dodgy starter cause it to cut out mid journey which is what initiated both breakdowns ?

Try creating another earth from the engine to the chassis/body and see if that makes it any better!

Well its completely horlicksed now. No attempt to start - had the RAC out for 2 hrs and recovered home. No comms with the ECU via diagnostic socket, and no signal from ECU to start relay

    BIG trouble

Not a faulty replacement battery? Had a few of those on my other cars which was annoying to say the least

I've had the ECU in the ECU doctors - it powered up ok, so I thought that was the culprit BUT when I tried a replacement cleared UEC, expecting to have comms at least, its still failing to link at the EOBD socket. Ive done all the checks I can with reference to circuit diagrams he provided and the ECU is getting both ignition and permanent live, and the ECU relay wires pass con checks. All fuses pass - get same reading from either UEC albeit the 'new' one needs coding so shows as unmatched.

So, can an ECU power up, be accessible on the bench, but not register on the car ?

So the original ECU leads to cut outs but with no starting its unlikely to be heat related,

Second ECU no comms and original tests fine on bench.

How do the harnesses and connections look?

As VMB said have you ruled out earthing probs?

    Tricky one, let us know.
