in reality, they're sealed for life and shouldn't need touching..just watch for any leaks..no leaks means no topups..
how odd we've been discussing the importance of engine oil, in several threads, and gearbox oil seems unimportant lol ..
sealed for life is a good theory , but no oil lasts forever .. as my vec cdti is now at 70,000 miles, Id assume a good dose of clean gearbox oil a good tonic for another trouble free 70k .
I know as a previous BMW 5 series owner, and forum admin at bmw5.co.uk, that BMW state autoboxes are sealed for life, but for £100, fresh oil and a new screen filter can eliminate stubborness to shift, and improve its overall efficiency.
yep, but as there is no carbonisation of the oil as there is no combustion going on ( like in the engine) then the oil will never get 'dirty'.. a magnet in the box traps swarf and the oil goes on forever..
it used to be possible to drain the boxes by taking the diff pan off, a bit extreme but the only way..then re-filling via the breather on the change housing..but these new boxes should be treated as sealed..
ahh fair points.. I always imagine the oil getting messed up like car oil
might grease the gear change linkages for a 'possibly' smoother change
