Best things to do for a 1.8 petrol
Looking to gain a few more BHP from the poxy 1.8 engine, its not a turbo and has a short ratio gearbox, which ill be looking into changing for a wider geared box, doing 3.3k rpm at 70mph dosnt sound healthy for the engine.
Ive put a cone filter on for now but not permanent by all means, but does sound a bit gruntier would an exhaust make any difference and what can be gained from a remap?

nothing to gain without either a re-map - or a major rebuild / expense
...big filter and big 'zorst - maybe sound the part - nothing else really - maybe even lose a horse or two.....
....even with a remap - gains will be a little without that turbo thing helping you out...........
I am sure some will disagree with me though..............

Sell and buy a 2.0t or a 2.8t.
Unless you throw mega bucks at it, your gains will be minimal....so basically you'd be wasting your cash mate.

@HarrysDad has got pretty good figures from his poxy 1.8
Just don't try to race a VXR, or your gearbox might fall apart like his did

reminds me of Mk2 Escort days - down the high street to the car shop - plugs points and condenser and WOW - feel the difference...!!!
(the only difference was a few quid lighter and skint knuckles - it was all in the mind!!)
...but seemed good to us...........

Being a 2005 the OPs car will be Z18xe not Z18xer like Harrysdad.
So it is 122 bhp standard.
There was someone who had one of these to 170ish. Cant remember his name or what he done to get there.
