Any ideas besides alternator ?

I got in car earlier (1.9cdti 8v)and I got a very sluggish try but no go, tried again, same..
Had no issues at all and car has been recently used on short and long journeys, but had noticed a couple of things in past week, yesterday after dropping m.i.l home, fired it up and it did seem a bit slow to turn but thought nothing of it,
few days ago I thought I smelt something after we stopped but couldn't pinpoint anything and it hadn't appeared since,
battery was showing 11.35 initially then after another check it was 11.25, not going up with all turned off.. Took the negative off battery and it started climbing slowly, so it's on the c tek charger so I can next check the starter and alternator for charging,, so does that exclude the alternator and any ideas what to try ? Will be checking for drain when the battery goes back in first before firing and checking voltage, but any ideas are very welcome chaps

I'd replace both the alternator and starter motor, the starters on these diesels are renound for becoming worn and lazy, you will notice a big difference when starting after replacing the starter as long as your battery is good. Best of luck.

Funnily enough a good mate of mine said he thought my starter never sounded good, for last few years, lol, but will see what arises first, as I do not have much time and have had a whiny gearbox for more than 2yrs, since I stuck Fuchs oil in box,that's very slowly getting worse, so mot throwing money at it unless it needs it,,

12.6 at idle then jumped to over 13v at 3k so makes sense the diode has gone ,, got a local alternator place doing exchange With good prices so happy enough with that.. just depends which one out of three it is
