    Default Air Con Question

My air con stopped working last July I took to a guy I trust and we could see the dye was all over the condenser radiator.

As the car then developed a leak from the coolant radiator I have had both radiators replaced with a view to getting the car regassed and restoring the air con.

Its been regassed today there were no leaks sadly theres no air con either. The dashboard light comes on but I'm told the clutch pulley on the compressor is not engaging and being driven by the aux belt and pulley.

The guy told me they seize up.

However I can manually turn the clutch pulley and it rotates smoothly and freely.

My question is when he says its seized does he mean that it cant pop in as opposed to rotate.

Ive seen YouTube videos where you can "bridge" the relay so the clutch has to pop in and air con would start running has anyway done this? Ive read there is a sensor(s) that stop the system running if gas pressure is low but its just been regassed.

Any ideas suggestions will be gratefully received,

As a thought, there is a pressure switch on the system, this , iirc, controls the compressor clutch and helps with diagnostics, if you have access to tech 2 (or other diagnostics doh dah thou shalt not mention) this will give an actual pressure reading, if it's not sensing the correct pressure, the clutch will not engage, saving the compressor from running dry

I would read through the troubleshooting section as there might be something there as it should be full of faults including ones for AC.

Thanks Dogbook - been through it before I posted. @ajcollins2 ive read this too but don't know anyone near me with Tech 2 - if a high pressure or low pressure doo dah was stopping the clutch engage would there be 14vdc at the compressor connector when you turn the AC on - surely it would be 0vdc ??

You could try removing the plug from the a/c pressure switch and see if the voltage drops?

@ajcollins2 - that's an idea but I have the 14 vdc on the connector to the compressor so I don't think a low pressure/high pressure sensor is inhibiting the compressors operation I think as the air con has been off or a year since the condenser leaked the electro magnet part of the compressor has seized. Anyone know here I can buy a recon compressor, cheapest new on TheBay is £225 quid

    I'm good mate thanks

Send @Critch a PM and see if he can fit you in soon. As his "motto" is "Test Don't Guess" , he will probably be able to tell you what "isn't wrong" BEFORE you go and "waste" your hard earned on un-necessary parts

He got my A/C going again after a retrofit of something else went slightly amiss, simply by testing / diagnosis (I say "simply" BUT that's how he makes it look LOL)

Hope you get it sorted without needless expense mate, and also hope that all is well with you

    Good luck
