    Question Known problems with 3.2 petrol Signums?

    Hi guys,

    Just stumbled here in search of info about Signum's

    Basically 2 dogs and baby are forcing me out of my current Accord Type R and at the moment my budget isn't massive so i've been looking at Signums as a decent compromise for space/spec/money after someone else has taken the hit on depreciation.

    Anyway, i've seen a 3.2 petrol elite with auto box and 20K miles for a fairly good price. Before i part with the cash, is there anything to look out for or known/common faults with this particular model?

    The engines are rock solid. Not 100% sure what to look out for in the auto box. Mark (GSi3.2) will be the person who knows.

    I'm here....back at work, but sneaking a little forum time....

    Fingery.. the one major issue you will possibly have with the 3.2 auto signum is the gearbox cooler..dependant on model year, there is a known fault with the engine radiator which has a seperate section where the engine's coolant and the autobox fluid meet to cool the auto's hotter fluid.. there is a seal in there that can POSSIBLY fail, leading to contamination of the gearbox with water ( not good)..later cars have had a modified rad fitted, and most of the faults where confined to the 53 plate or earlier cars..it is a a rare fault, but you do need to know..

    apart from that the 3.2 is a very reliable engine.. you will see a little emulsion on the top of the oil filler neck ( caused by cold air hitting it when driving) that may make you think the engine has head gasket problems, but you just need to remove the neck and put the cap directly on the engine's cam cover..
    They like regular oil changes, so think about doing it every 15,000 miles, and they like the antifreeze kept up to strenght..

    Mrs GSi's ( the wife's) 3.2 signum auto has been an absolute brick..can't fault it..and driven with her sensible head on will give 31mpg on a run, or if she's racing again it'll give around 15...her average combined is 29mpg..

    Hmm the bit about the radiator is interesting Mark, anyway of telling if my 53 3.2 has been changed or seal fitted?

    You could nip in to a Vx dealer and ask for a service report on the car, you will need the V5 and some ID, and there may be a small charge if you ewant a print out, but as Mark says, visually you can't tell.

    Had this fault on my 2.2Dti. New gearbox is the only route they can take once it's been contaminated.
