Default Question for any I.T. Guys out there

I was wondering if any of you happen to know of any good yet cheap monitoring software?

Basically to monitor the servers so that when cpu usage or memory usage hits a certain threshold, it will warn us.

Also anything to monitor the network bandwith.

And finally.. we used to have minesweeper that came with a utility for the email. we could open a small window and it would show the e-mail flow.. to, from and the subject. Now we've done away with minesweeper, we're looking for something that is purely a mail flow monitor.

    Thanks in Advance.

    http://www.google.co.uk/search?num=1...s+server&meta=
Plenty of free downloads, but since this is seen as a commercial application, most of the downloads in this category come with a price tag, and a pretty hefty one at that!

    Also look at :

We use Nagios on our network: http://nagios.org/

It's an open source network management tool that can be configured to monitor network links/services (SMTP, HTTP, etc), servers, hard disk usage etc etc.

You can fully configure what notifications it gives you during failures, and defuine what you class as a warning or critical failure for each service, i.e. a delay on email sending would show as a warning, a block on emails going out would be critial etc.

It's also got an auto network drawing tool in it, and a web interface to boot!

Here's a quote from their website's about page:

Nagios has a lot of features, making it a very powerful monitoring tool. Some of the major features are listed below:

    * Monitoring of network services (SMTP, POP3, HTTP, NNTP, PING, etc.)
    * Monitoring of host resources (processor load, disk and memory usage, running processes, log files, etc.)
    * Monitoring of environmental factors such as temperature
    * Simple plugin design that allows users to easily develop their own host and service checks
    * Ability to define network host hierarchy, allowing detection of and distinction between hosts that are down and those that are unreachable
    * Contact notifications when service or host problems occur and get resolved (via email, pager, or other user-defined method)
    * Optional escalation of host and service notifications to different contact groups
    * Ability to define event handlers to be run during service or host events for proactive problem resolution
    * Support for implementing redundant and distributed monitoring servers
    * External command interface that allows on-the-fly modifications to be made to the monitoring and notification behavior through the use of event handlers, the web interface, and third-party applications
    * Retention of host and service status across program restarts
    * Scheduled downtime for suppressing host and service notifications during periods of planned outages
    * Ability to acknowledge problems via the web interface
    * Web interface for viewing current network status, notification and problem history, log file, etc.
    * Simple authorization scheme that allows you restrict what users can see and do from the web interface
We've got a large screen in our IT area which is constantly on the Tactical overview page, so we pick up on problems (almost) straight away.

    Cheers,
    Graham

Edit: We run it on a FreeBSD server, but it runs on Linux as well.

I can understand where you're coming from!
Linux can be quite if you've never experienced a *nix environment before. Which I hadn't before I started working here.
