MTech V-Shift short shifter for F40 gearbox
just fitted this today, and as requested, a quick write up.
the item in question is this:-
http://www.short-shifters.com/v-shif...ifter-kit.html
advertised for the F40 gearbox from chassis blahblahblah.
fits many derivatives, including the 1.9CDTi 150 in my Signum.
the fitting instructions are online, and are fairly comprehensive and self explanatory:-

seems straightforward, right?
OK, so you can see where the linkage is if you look down the side of the battery box toward the bulkhead.
on the diesel, it's necessary to remove the inlet pipe to the throttle body, move the rectifier(?) pack from the side of the battery box, and that's pretty much the access sorted.
WARNING!!
the instructions infer that removing the cap on the top of the original linkage is easy.
IT'S NOT!
drill a 5mm hole as close to the edge of the cap as you can, because the end of the thread that secures the linkage is RIGHT below the cap.
now, take your long nose pliers, and IGNORE them, cos they ain't gonna cut it!
I ended up attacking the cover with a pound-through screwdriver.
then a bigger one, cos the smaller one's tip snapped off.
hammering the screwdriver into the top of the cap, a bit of swearing and wriggling later, and voila!

it's less than half an inch deep, but when it's being awkward it feels like a foot!
cap out, it reveals the 13mm nut that holds the linkage on.
now's a good time to pop the cables off the linkage, a screwdriver wedged between the cable and the linkage, quick twist, and presto, they're off.
13mm socket on an extension, crack the nut off and remove.
it isn't tight, did mine with a 1/4" drive without trouble.
note!
I tried to use a 1/2" drive socket, the wall of the socket was too thick, and wouldn't fit into the linkage, hence the 1/4".
once the nut is off, be careful not to drop it in the engine bay, reach down and wriggle the linkage off the splined shaft.
the instructions mention a puller, wasn't needed in my case, but be aware of it.
linkage free, manoeuvre it round the cable and out.
WARNING!!!
the instructions give the impression that refitting is reverse of removal.
it sort of is, BUT, see the marked POSITION on the spline in the instructions?
it isn't as obvious without a hi-res photo!
and the double spline that it fits on is on the bulkhead side of the shaft.
TIP!!
there is a hole drilled in the new linkage HERE:-
mtech-short-shifter-type-v-shift-for-the-f40-trans.jpg
and a hole at the front of the turret HERE:-
linkage.jpg
that will line up and give you an idea of where it goes.
again, arm deep in the engine bay, push and wriggle the new linkage into place.
13mm nut back on, don't go mad with it, and put the replacement plastic cap on.
clip the cables back into place on the linkage, should pop easily back on.

replace everything you removed to get access, and enjoy a reported 45% less movement!
the results are quite dramatic, the gear shift feels a LOT move positive, and a LOT less movement!
because........SIGNUM!
