The Insignia at 50,000 miles...
So, after almost 4 years of ownership to the day (11th June) my Insignia Elite clocked 50,000 miles. That puts me halfway through the lifetime warranty, and 50,000 miles till I can think about getting a new Mercedes E class...
I'm not going to go into details about the car as you can see the photos and read all about it in this thread from 18 months ago. I've fitted some 18" 13 spoke alloys since then but they need a refurb...
The main point of interest was the fuel economy. I did an update at 30K miles here but 50K was always a good place to look at hoe it's been run in and what sort of figures it's getting. I use an App on my iPad called Roadtrip HD which gives lots of pretty graphs and statistics. For those of you who like those sorts of things, here we go:
And the pence per mile graph which takes account of both the economy of the car and the price of fuel:
I also have a spreadsheet which I used for all my other cars before I got the app, and it can make a couple of graphs the app doesn't, and that's to put the average MPG against the average speed, and show the calculated MPG against the On Board Computer.
I find the correlation between the MPG and average speed quite fascinating , although I have seen my average up at 65mpg when I refuelled, reset and then went 25 miles up the motorway at 50mph in roadworks...
You can see the effect of the engine bedding in over time, and although the cost has varied more due to the price of fuel than the economy of the car itself.
It's also quite impressive to see how accurate the computer is against the calculated MPG - it's averaged 97%, usually no more than a few percent out. There are a few occasions where it varies quite a bit, and this is caused by me using a petrol station locally which is on a bit of a slope and lets me get a lot more fuel in that I can on a level forecourt. Hence the entry which gives 895 miles from 76 litres of fuel, despite the car having a 70 litre fuel tank...
The section where the app lists the fuel type against mileage and economies is a bit misleading really, as you can see I've used many different types and not covered the same amount of driving in the same conditions every time. If I know I'm doing a lot of motorway driving soon I do tend to go for some BP Ultimate to see if it helps in any way. Everyone loves a good placebo...
Also worth mentioning are the figures since I started driving in 2001, I've covered 208,428 miles (in a lot of different Vauxhalls and one Nissan Micra) and spent £23,603 on fuel.
Anyway, enough nerding - see you all in another 50K miles!

Can't believe your still recording your fuel data lol. MPG figures look good. Would you ever consider an economy remap?

15 years and counting - it's not something I'd want to stop either, I need to know these things!
I'd only consider a remap to get back the 190bhp I had in my old 1.9 mapped Vectra and the 3.0 Signum, but with a warranty that will last for another 50,000 miles I really can't justify it. The engine hasn't missed a beat bar a software issue and boost solenoid in the first 3000 miles so I'd be hesitant to fiddle with it at all, and I can only imagine an economy map would cause it to lose power - not what you need in a car weighing the best part of 2 tonnes....

Watched 5th gear on YouTube with a diesel fuel test on premium and regular diesel. Shell V-power gave the highest power figures.

Kinda have the same for mine on excel. And if you take the mph and divide by mpg you get the average gallons per hour of fuel consumption too.

I do love a good spreadsheet and a graph made from some good hard data....

how's yours doing for mpg? i'm getting 62mpg on the work run, weekend tootling and general everything etc, and 68mpg on motorway runs
