Interesting reading this , I'm having abit of an issue at the moment , after new inner/outer track rods and new droplinks it felt great but I'm getting an odd feeling again , I can only describe it as what feels like a metallic rattle coming up through the steering wheel and when cornering it feels like the wheels go light and then heavy again , it feels like there is movement somewere but the wheels have no play in them at all , do you think this could be the cause ? Sorry to hijack the thread

Do you feel a slight dead spot when gently moving steering wheel from straight head left and right like 1-2mm with engine off.? If so get someone to wiggle the steering wheel only in the dead spotwhilst you watch the uj at the steering rack, there should be no play in the uj at all.

If you are going to try the disconnecting battery reset out of interest give the battery a charge while off the car.... I had my steering behave like this and after replacing the 'old' battery with a new one it went away. Seems the electric pump for the steering draws a lot of current and the battery I had couldn't back up the alternator output.

I had this issue last year.
    I checked:
    Alternator
    Charged the battery
    Changed the fluid
    Changed the whole pump twice

Then I went back to the UJ. took it off the pump end and it was stiff on one side. As it's a bit of a job to replace the whole thing I drowned it in WD40 and gave it a good wiggle around and refitted. Now I give a little spray as a pm every few months

    Problem solved
