    Default Drivetrain Question.

whats does the circled part insert into?
are there any bearing/seals that could wear used on the end?

    any help would be great.

    Thanks

It is the inboard constant velocity joint, it goes into the gearbox, there is another one on the other side and two outer CV joints that go into the wheelhub, they sort of articulate so the wheels can rotate and turn at the same time and "bend" when the car goes over a bump in the road.... A real feat of engineering really, not many people know what they do or look like, but just take them for granted, people talk about will the gearbox take the increase in touque when they fit a tuning box, but do not think about the CV joint, A lot of clever designe and engineering and manurfacture goes into this part that works silently and un noticed............. As to bearing and seals wearing out, it is not un common for them to "break" but quite rare, they are very sturdy and well made...

anyone know a rough price for replacing a cv joint on the vec (1.8ls 2003)?

its the gearbox end on the passenger side.

i noticed the other day that the cv boot was not secured on the driveshaft end.

why do you need to replace the joint, is it worn out??.. if it's just a loose boot then why not just re grease the joint and re secure it with a new band clamp ( not a cable tie)..

As far as I know CV joint get damaged if the plastic boot around breaks, dust, water, etc. comes in and ruin them.....so is very wise to check the plastic boot every now an then.

It might sound daft, but could the caliper be catching on your new wheels, as when a CV joint "goes" it normally make a sort of clonking noise especially when on full lock, they dont normally make a grating sound, why do you think it is that particular CV joint??
