Default Nurburgring and 3rd party liability

I have a slight dilemma. I was planning to take my extensively modified Signum to the Nurburgring with some fellow club members at beginning of May. This car is insured with a firm that specialises in modified cars. However upon inspection of the certificate of insurance, I have found that it specifically excludes the Nurburgring.

A search on the internet reveals that this is a grey area, and in fact the insurance companies may not even be allowed to do this under European Law, as the Nurburgring is technically not a racetrack but a public Toll Road. But in the event of the worst thing happening, I wouldn't want to be fighting the legal might of an evil insurance company over this point.

Obviously, I intend to drive carefully and do everything possible to avoid any accident whilst on the ring, and I accept that if I trash my own car, damage the circuit, etc. I will have to pay for that.

However unexpected things can happen and if I were somehow the cause of another driver/rider's injury or death, or stopped by an officer for any reason and asked to produce a certificate of insurance, having that exclusion clearly written would leave me in a very difficult position both legally, financially and morally.

I know most people just go and do it, with no concern for legalities and their laps go by without any issue. But because I'm a paranoid type of person I fear I won't enjoy it with this in the back of my mind, or may even make a mistake because of this unease.

I have another Signum, which is standard and insured with a well known mainstream company. There is no mention of the Nurburgring (or any other terms that might encompass the ring) being excluded on their certificate or schedule.

Obviously this car will be somewhat slower, but at least I won't be worried about insurance issues and so might actually enjoy it more.

I'm now erring towards taking the standard car. What do you guys think?

I would also pose the question to the forum insurance traders if they are reading this - do your policies exclude the Nurburgring too? If they don't, I will certainly be changing come renewal time...

I've had 3 seperate policies from 3 companies over the past few years - all have specified the nurburgring as an exception so I think it may be a pretty standard thing. I've read lots of horror stories about insurance complications. When people have hit hi spec cars. I' would still love to do it though! Something on the bucket list

I thought you could just phone your insurer and add a track day to your policy but looks like this might not be as easy to do as i first thought now

old thread but the nurburgring isnt on any insurance and tbh you can get special insurance for track days there but its a very large amount. If you are worried hire something its cheap enough and places like apex have excess free offers so if something was to happen you walk away without costs.

I have taken every car I own on the ring but I do take it steady I am aware of the consequences and also other people are fools on the ring!

(my old vec in the profile picture on the ring to!)
