I know re-covering of the gear knob has been well covered in other posts and carried out by many on this forum but wanted to share these photos as I couldn't find any good "in progress" photos on any of the posts to properly explain the best method. I know it is fairly self-explanatory but these may help somebody.
Usual starting point; very tired-looking and worn out, PU gear knob.
Bought a new "real leather" cover off eBay for £4.00 inc delivery (which turned out to really be real leather... really!); didn't have high expectations to be honest but I am really pleased with the end result!
This is the old and new covers next to each other:

The original gear knob with the old PU covering:

PU Covering stripped off, and residual glue removed using foam cleaner and a cloth:

New Leather cover; turn inside out, start stretching and "rolling" over over from the thinner end (bottom) first. Take your time and feed a little over, rotate, a little more, etc.

Once fully covered, take a small flat-bladed screwdriver and ease (a very little at a time) the leather into the retaining gap around top and bottom of the gear knob

Re-insert the top cap after a quick clean & polish; ready to re-fit

The photos do not do this justice; the old cover was really knackered and the new one looks, feels (and smells!) so much better. £4.00 and about 20 minutes work (once gear knob removed from car!)!
Now to change that knackered old gear stick gaiter while I have the gear knob off......
