Default Article on Performance Air filters

Whilst I was checking out what service parts I'm getting for the Vec I came across what I think is a pretty interesting article (link at the bottom) about the performance differences between performance air filter and OEM types.

Now I am im not really mechanically minded, I just enjoy researching things before I go ahead and buy them and this made me think twice about cotton and foam type air filters.

I've read a few things online where people would be concerned about the increase in contaminants getting through and having two effects.

    1. That they can cause 'dusting damage' to turbo blades reducing performance.

    2. They may increase the amount of air getting to the combustion chamber but due to the increase in particles getting through this means the air is of a poorer quality and the burn itself is no better as a result.

I'd be interested to see any counters to what written in the link to, there are plenty of people on here who really know there stuff and would probably be able to read much more into the information on offer than I ever could.

I used them on older non turbo cars and race bikes. Ok for the bikes as engines get rebuilt a fair amount and are higher performance so more sensitive to things like that. On my car now I use oem as I've read on here someone did back to back teats with genuine over k&n and yes you got more HP I think it was 5 or 10 but you need to protect the turbo hence sticking with oem

Had them one on my old Vectra CDTI 150 and never noticed a difference - no more than with OEM. There have been cases of the oil coating that you put on these filters causing MAF sensor issues too. I personally don't think their worth the extra £££'s for the extra BHP they're supposed to provide. OEM all the way imho.

I ran a K&N panel on my C2 VTS years ago, and whilst I noticed a slightly different intake noise I certainly didn't feel better acceleration or pick up. I was pretty surprised that in just 24 minutes the K&N let in 7 grams of dust, I know these tests will be an accelerated version of real road running but the difference compared to the best paper filter of just .4 grams over 60 minutes is scary.

I reckon I'll stick with OEM and regular changing.

interesting read, maybe worth thinking about using an OE filter rather than my pipercross...

I reckon for him they probably work great when chasing every last BHP and rebuilding the engine every 500 miles lol.

If I could rebuild an engine in a weekend I would turn that into a side business, the truth is that I could barely rewire my toaster lol.
