Angry 09 2.0 cdti snapped camshaft

Ok, so a mates 2.0 cdti with the grey TI an 09 plate has been fobbed of by a garage saying they cant do the work it cant be done etc etc.
Found snapped cambelt almsot clean snap and the exahsut side cam mvoing freely about.
Cam cover off and as you can see the cam has snapped after No1 and its taken some followers with it.

What im asking is this, do these have a tendency to snap camshofts as the force on that poor cambelt must have been alot and everything rotates freely and the belt wa sin great condition. Its a 102k engine allways been looked after.
Trying to get to the bottom of this as cheaply as possible so it might be possible to use the camcover and cams from my old Z19DTH. Anyone done this as it would be a cheaper fix than buying a new cam and i can use the old followers if there all the same parts?

Trouble is doing all this will be an amount of work and we dont really want it to get back together to find it does not work and needs a new engine or the head to come off.

    Can anyone advise? @Critch

Thanks any examples/advice is all good. But look at the cambelt its as if something has locked up then just snapped it and all the pulleys/water pump rotate easily ;/ stupid cars lol

Jeez, never seen a camshaft snap before on an engine failure. Just bought one of those myself (that engine) funnily enough was just talking to Dean about doing the cam belt and water pump at some point soon as I don't know the history of the car then see this post, that may jump it up the neccessity list

Wouldn't worry about it Ian as the garage that does most of my work inc fitting my engine and turbo etc etc have even scratched their heads at this as they've never seen one do that before as its a puzzle cos there's no obvious cause to the belt failure

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I was just wondering if you got any further with this one? I too have a mate with an expired 2.0cdti, but his has the oil seal failure problem that has trashed the bottom end. Interested to know if there is any interchangeability of parts? i.e. Z19DTH bottom end and A20DTH head?

Why be sorry? Thats the whole point of creating threads and in the right place for others to find out what people before them did.

Unfortunately i don't know but im sure the cams were a different part number. If you have 2 have a play

    Hi,
just a bit of info, the bottom pulley wears on these engines on the keyway resulting in timing movement and locks the engine,
resulting in snapped camshaft broken followers etc.
I don't know whether you can just swap the heads onto a 1.9 block, I know in the trade it is said that fiat just redesigned the head but
I think there was more to it than that.

My wifes 2.0 cdti insignia had a camshaft support bearing break up and only my ear picked up the slight knock on start up and prevented a bigger problem. I ran the engine with the rocker cover off and the cam was moving from side to side and nearly locking the engine. When the engine nearly locked the cam belt struggled to turn the engine and was nearly snapping.

I spoke to vauxhall and the cam support bearing part number had been superseded 8 times indicating vauxhall know there is an issue .....
