Default Advice please!!: Irmy tyre valve caps will not budge!!

Went to check my tyre pressures today. I have alloy Irmscher valve caps fitted and two of them are stubbornly refusing to budge. They wont even start turning.

Got a bit of rag and wrapped the valve stem itself with it then a pair of mole grips to hold it. Used a 12mm spanner to try and turn the valve cap and all I managed to do was rip and tear some of the rubber shrouding around the valve.

How on earth am I going to remove these, any ideas?.

My own fault really. I had a set of these first fitted a few months ago and some scroatbag pinched them. So the new set I got went on deliberately tighter than the first ones. Previous to this I could always remove them although they were tight, but these ones are stuck fast!!!.

A few have had the same problem m8.

I think it was a case of hold the stem and as you have already done, turn with mole grips/spanner etc. Hope you don't break the valve off though

EDIT: just found an old thread m8 HERE

Grease them before you fit them to stop the weather getting at the threads inside. I learnt this the once I fitted anodised metal caps. Mate at a tyre depot had to take tyres off & replace the valves. That's your easiest bet.

    Cheers folks.

I'll try the petrol mentioned in the other thread and failing that, get the Dremmel out.

yes you can hack saw em off as a last resort, grease the threads before you put light anodised or similar on, I find a pair of plairs to support the rubber and another to turn the valve usually does the trick, try a squirt of wd40 !

I had this problem once got some silver metal ones from Halfords and had a slow puncture in one of the tyres. While trying to remove it snapped the end of the thread off only cost about a tenner to get a new one fitted but was still a bit of a ball ache.

Had a go yesterday. Still would not budge so I resorted to the Dremmel.

Got the valve cap off, aye, but my cack handedness also sliced a cut in the valve.

So ended up getting a new valve fitted at the local tyre place for £7.

Two others are still refusing to budge, one I managed remove.

Will defo be putting some grease on them next time.

    Default Two Opposite Metals

    Higher,

I'd stick with plastic dust caps fella, i had the same problem with a Laguana. The reason this happens is due to the two different metals fusing together. Even grease will not make any differnce in my experiece.

Hope this helps, if you need any further advice any decent tyre firm will confirm this is a generic problem.

    Regards,

    JCB
