    Default Coolant Loss

Car has internal coolant leakage. Just had new head gasket with head pressure tested and skimmed so eliminated as likely cause.

Cause now suspected cracked cylinder liner.

Has anyone had experience of using:-

    a) Wynns Cylinder Block Seal?

    b) CarGo Seal Up?

    c) Bars Heavy Duty Radiator Sealant?

I’m sure you have had it all checked. If not I would consider the following:-

    1) Does the oil look like mayonnaise?

    2) Is the coolant discoloured?

    3) A Co2 test via the coolant reservoir.

    4) Is it an automatic? If so check the ATF cooler.

    5) Check the heater matrix for leaks (smell of coolant in car plus wet carpet).

I personally would not use any of those products at best they are a temporary measure at worst they could cause more problems especially if it is an auto as that stuff can get in wrong place and turn to jelly restricting the coolant flow! Best bet is get it diagnosed properly first.

Gsi 3.2 is your man for this sort thing hopefully he will be along with his suggestions.

As previous threads... it really needs a block test to really diagnose the fault 100%...

I don't hold with the 'quick fix' solutions in bottles, they never last.. if it is a cracked liner then it will have to be replaced..

Get all the tests done, then worry about the fix..

Thanks Gsi 3.2 I understand cylinder leak test required and I intend to have this done soon.

I have ruled out a cylinder liner replacement due to prohibitive costs. Have spent some £770 so far and not sorted problem, further spend on ageing motor unjustifiable.

Don't understand how cracked liner could have occurred, engine never overheated. Could it be a porous block?

    reply to stickshift

    a) oil normal with a little condensation under filler cap and on dipstick

    b) coolant not in running 500miles with clear purging additve after head gasket replacement.

    c) CO2 test done prior to head gasket replacement with no result

    d) Not an auto

    e) No heater leaks

to Gsi 3.2 plse see above responses. Just realised CO2 test done and negative which would rule out cracked liner - this would leave porous block a possibility? This is why i started new thread to see if anyone has tried with success Wynns Cylinder Block Seal.

From your experience is z22se engine block prone to porosity??

Some guys on z22se have mentioned it but ive not heard of any. This was the reason the saab 2.2 head is cast different (no polystyrene effect). Incidentally there is a z22se zaffy fitted with a saab head with 200 bhp. Im no engineer so someone else will have to answer the difference in between the 2 casting methods and the saab benefits. I sure this small problem was fixed for the c so tbh ive never taken much interest in it. Im sure Mark will be along in a bit to explain it further/properly.

The CO2 sniffer test is never 100%, but is a good indication.. getting the block tested will totally rule it in or out..The Z22se is no better or worse than other engines in my experience.. no-one can garuantee 100% that the casting is free from defects as they don't xray every block they make..it's just good enginnering against the luck of the draw..

if it isn't the head gasket, and it isn't a liner..and there is no obvious external leaks then i really don't know where else, or how else it could hide the amount of water loss you described..
