Default Car cranks but wont start

Got an 08 vectra cdti 1.9. for the last few weeks the car has been taking longer to start. Eventually it will now not start at all. Fault code showing P0340 cam sensor. There has been no stalling or lumpy running issues, just sudden none starter. After reading up it looks like changing the cam sensor will be a big job to do and garage has quoted £1000?....so been doing some tinter-webbing and found out it could be the crankshaft sensor that is at fault. Anyone shed some light on this - can get a new sensor for £20 and fit this myself.

ps - Battery and fuses and all the usual other none starter checks done.

    Thanks

If it is the cam sensor I'm pretty sure its sits quite visable just under the plastic engine cover and would take around 5 minutes to swap if its the part I'm thinking of , were they get £1000 from I have no idea , I no you said you have checked everything but have you checked the starter motor ? Slow cranking and then completely dead is normally the starter

holly mother of God what garage did you use? a think even dealers would be less than that.

is you're car the 150 or 120 bhp model?

What tool has been used to retrieve the code?

generally a cam sensor will not cause a complete non starter but delayed extended cranking

what you can get with can sensor fault and a non start is a snapped/ jumped timing belt

I would suggest you don't ive straight into changing cam sensor without doing a few tests

From the Haynes, to me neither of those look like £1000 jobs... I'd go to a different garage if you don't find the answer on here

Thanks for the info!! garage have said that, timing belt would need to come off and also they would have to change it along with the sensor. i,m going to change the crankshaft sensor tomorrow and see what happens.

I think they were either trying to pull a fast one or they just haven't got a clue , good luck with sorting it

    Must be a 120 then

cam pulley needs removing be even still it's not anywhere near that price to do that job

sounds like your garage doesn't know what their doing and isn't confident that would sort it so have oriced it to make sure they don't get the job.

not hard to test if it's actually getting a signal.

Most accurate way is with an oscilloscope

it can be tested with a multimeter but I'm sure of what the reading would be off the top of my head - sorry.

i think their ac inductive crank and cam sensors (not 100% certain on cam sensor though) it's a bit late in day for my brain to retrieve the archives lol

but looking to set multimeter on ac volts
go across pins and should see roughly 3 volts

but issue with a multimeter is It could still miss an issue

perhaps if you got the reading another member could compare their running engine reading and maybe five you a yay or nay answer

I aplogise for being uncertain on voktage readings
ive got a bit used to using and oscos ope and using the visual side of things

My 120 refused to start a few weeks ago - would turn over but not start - it was the
Crankshaft sensor - bit of a pain to replace, due to the limited access but do able
