The plain truth is that the 2.0T engine is addictive, due to its smooth power delivery and responsiveness. Once driven, never forgotten IMO
Just an update on mpg! Now I'm not obsessed and quite frankly can easily afford to run it! Just found this an interesting exercise! So this week on my mixed road and motorway commute of 75miles per day. Driving really normal, enjoying the turbo on the motorway.. Sitting at 70-80 and odd burst to 90. (Not been over 100 in years)
fuel light was on Monday morning, put £50 of BP premium unleaded @ £1.19. (42litres or 9.26gallons)
Reset tacho... Car just coming into the red now, my tacho say 310miles done. Doing the maths, this is 33.5mpg
Not bad.. Also proves my fuel computer is under reading as it says same miles.... But only 31.5mpg.
the result being, £62.5 per week in basic commute..... The 1.8vvti used more, closer to £65 and the diesel used slightly less at pretty much £55
Not a lot in it... Is there?
I think you hit the published combined mpg figure for the facelift 2.0 damn near on the nose there. Impressive indeed. I would add that my first Vectra a non-vvt 1.8, never bettered the 2.0T that replaced it on mpg either.
Indeed I do. I get all the power and torque I can handle from my remapped 1.9CDTI, but it comes at the expense of pure smooth driving pleasure. The narrow power band and the torque kicking in at 1800 means more gear changes. The diesel forced-induction engine is just more 'forced' than the 2.0T one.
Yes the 1.9CDTI is every bit as quick on boost as ny old remapped 2.0T, but is far less subtle. i have discovered that driving the diesel as much as possible around the 2k revs mark in the right gear(s) does make it more driveable without sacrificing fuel economy and taking advantage of the signicant torque avantage it has over the 2.0T which will pull easily all day long from 1100 revs to the red line, also avoiding getting bogged down at low revs, losing throttle response and doing the engine no favours at all.
I am not inclined to get another diesel.....been there done that......
Dual mapping can solve the CDTi harshness. Mine has a very lazy throttle peddle off sport which is great for smooth driving. Flick it in to sport and it's more of an on/off switch for when you want some fun
For me, having also had 1.9 cdti mapped and with sport button, probably very similar cars on midrange... But bottom end and top end the 2.0t is in another league.. Well to me it is and it's pretty much standard! You can feel the similar power, but it's the sustained and incremental delivery... It's soo different!
anyway, this isn't a slating session for diesel.. The 1.9 engine I still rate as awesome, even experienced owning a twin turbo Saab one. But for me, the petrol out does them all...
