    Angry Balls!

Just noticed this afternoon that the tax disc on my car ran out yesterday. When I was going through the process of buying the car the salesperson told me I had to get my insurance company to forward them a cover note so they could tax the car. I thought to myself "That's good, they're gonna stick some tax on it for me. How nice of them!".

Anyway, I'm at work this afternoon and look out of the window at the car (as you do!) and notice that the tax disc is red i.e. an '05 one. A 30-09-05 one.

I then ring the dealer and say "You told me you needed the cover note sent to you in order to tax the car and you never did it."

    Salesperson "I never said that."

Me "You did say exactly that and, in saying you didn't, you're effectively calling me, the customer, who has just given you 12 grand, a liar."

Them "If you look at the sales contract you signed, it doesn't say anything about us taxing the car. You have to ask us to do it and we charge you for it."

Me "Yes, I realise the contract I signed is legal and binding, but you did verbally tell me you were going to tax the car."

    Them "No, I didn't!"

This goes on for about 20 minutes and the sales manager then comes on the phone and says I have no proof of this being said and it's basically tough sh**, buy your own tax disc!

I'm absolutely bubbling at the way I was spoken to by this complete to**pot of a manager, who has basically accused me of lying. I'm also mad at myself for going there to buy a car, for being so gullible to believe they were going to give me something for nothing and for not noticing they were selling me a car with only 10 days of VED left on it!

I work 12 hour shifts and am not off work until Wednesday, which will be when I can get down the P.O. to get a new one.

Looks like I'm cycling to work for the next 3 days!

Swines. Don't know about Wilts Police but up here in Northumberland there is still 14 days grace. If you know anyone in the local Constabulary, it may be worth asking the question.

Is it possible to tax on the Internet where you are??

I did mine & it came in 2 days (although it said up to 5).

They check insurance etc on line & you pay by card. Very simple, & convenient. Not sure if its just a trial in the Mids though.

PO is a total pain in the rear. I hate going to them.

it is not unknown for the dealer not to give you tax ... but there are alot of dealers who do give you free tax .... so you were not gullable for thinking the dealer was indeed gonna give you tax , just a fact that thier not a good dealer and only interested in profit and not the cusomers happiness ..... go to citizens advice and giv'em a kick up the butt ...... how many other people have they done this to ???

Christ, I didn't know that. That is a handy one to know. We'll all have to put didtaphones in our pockets when we go to buy cars

I had a lot of problems when buying my car and went to Citezens Advice/Trading Standards, really helpful bunch, there are a lot of rules / laws which were brought in because of rougue car traders and you are protected more than you think.

Verball contracts are always hard to PROVE, as it can come down to your word against his. Unless you had a witness to the conversation, I would forget it and chalk it down to experience and about £82.50. You will probably get nowhere, and have expended much energy in getting there.

    Just my opinion

On the flip-side, the garage will not want the potential legal hassle any more than you..... they may change their minds as soon as they get a letter from a solicitor and pay up for the tax.... thats a bit of a gamble though, they may dig their heels in to avoid having to pay out even more for the "inconvenience and mental anguish!!!".

If I were you I would write to the garage (to the franchise manager not the sales manager) and try and have a meeting with the sales manager and his boss. You want to express your displeasure with this and explain that they will lose your future custom for servicing, as well as that of several of your vauxhall driving friends (even if you don't know anyone that goes there its not a lie... theres 315+ vectra drivers here that that'll never go there!!! ) Don't shout the odds, just ask them if they are willing to do anything to win back your confidence.

Remember the Sales Manager doesn't care where you get your car serviced, his figures aren't affected by that at all.... if however you speak to the franchise manager in a language he'll understand (Profits!!!) you might appeal to his better nature and get your tax payed for..... if they fold too easily and pay for the tax... go for the throat... you want a set of mats, mudguards, etc etc etc!!!!!!
