    confused air flow meter question?

    hi all,

ive just got a quick question regarding my afm, should the housing have some kind of grill in?
like this one i found on ebay:-

my housing is just a tube with the air flow meter hanging in the middle.
is this meant to be like this?
i am getting poor fuel consumption and lagging performance that is why i have been looking into solutions and hopefully i might have found something.
ive got a 1.8 sri on a 06 plate by the way.

There was a grill in the AFM in my wifes Vectra B. I would have thought thetre should be a grill to protect the "probe", can you swap the grill from your old one,

it's designed to be fitted with the finer grid to the airbox side, coarser grid to the engine..

the photo's in that link look fine to me..but to be 100% you should cross reference the part numbers with him..you need VX part number 90530463.. which costs £83.00+vat from vx BTW..

the afm in the link wont fit my car, i was just wanted to show a picture of what i didn't have in my afm.
if i bought a new afm from vx will it come in the housing or will it just be the sensor?

    cheers for the help guys.

the previous owner might have taken the grills out thinking they are improving the perfomance?
cant see it though because it was a fleet car previously.
other that i cant see why they would have been removed.
would the absence of these grills cause me any trouble?

it could let debris in, colliding with the AFM's sensors and damaging them, but to be honset, if the airfilter is any good it will filter out anything big enough to cause problems..I wouldn't overly worry as long as you're not tempted to touch it.
