    Default Strange problem

Earlier I got in my 2.0DTi (Y20DTH) and started it up. Car/spanner light on. It does this sometimes but then goes off as I set off, but this time it didn't and the car sounded like it didn't have an exhaust on and no power. Then after about 20 seconds noise went away and did the warning light. Would it sound like there was no exhaust if the EGR was stuck open?

Car did the above again today after I picked it up from passing its MOT. This time I set off and then the car cut out. Started up again straight away and EML went off and drove fine. Any ideas?

If your spanner light comes on with the ignition and goes off when the engine has started, it is usually an indication that your cars electronics have logged one or more fault codes. Once read, these codes can point towards the cause of problems.

A decent code reader from ebay shouldn't cost much more than £15 and is a really useful addition to a Vauxhall car driver's toolkit.

Taking the car to a main dealer to get their equipment plugged in, can set you back around £50 so it should pay for itself fairly quickly.

I borrowed a snap on bluepoint (or something like that) from a friend last year but there was no commutation. It worked on his 2005 CDTi. I did some research and as far as I can tell a lot of readers don't work on pre 2004 diesels. Could anyone recommend one around £15 that works with a 2002 Y20DTH. Thanks

If you know anyone with OPCOM or VAUXCOM these will read the codes, or post a request in your regional group, some kind member might plug theirs in for a few beer tokens.

Was that after a friendly no cost code read from a local member ?

Or, was it a FULL and OVERPRICED diagnostic from a main dealer solution ?
