    Default Neighbours

I usually get on with neighbours, but one is really starting to pee me off.

He's a DIY'er, and is constantly doing somthing, now over the last few weeks hes been very busy, drilling and banging (if hes not carefull he'll turn his house into dust!!!). now I don't mind, usually dusn't bother me.
he always starts working after 6pm, fine i'm not botherd, bit he dusn't know when to stop!!! one night he was banging and drilling at 12.15AM! and i had to be up for work... the night before he was knocking up cement at 10.30pm.

hes at it again tonight, its 9.30pm now, drills going like a good'n, I cant watch tv as the drill interfears with the screen.. i wonder what time he'll finish tonight??

what beats be is how he always starts after 6pm, he dusn't work and is in all day most days, so why not work during the day.

I'm not normally like this, and i've not said anything to him, i guess i just need to get it off my chest, and why not on here .

grr... well i feel better for that...

oh nearly forgot ....he really hacked me off the other day! i come home from work, puts car on the drive.... about hour laters, its coverd in brick dust and finberglass dust!

You could try and find out if your local Environmental Health Office have an out of hours number.... aknock on the door and a noise abaitment order would shut him up!! Alternatively, speak with Enviro Health in the morning, they'll send him a letter warning him of his conduct.

Go and have a polite talk to him. You never know he may not be self aware.

As above, he may not realise that he's causing a problem. A quiet word and he may change his pattern/lateness of drilling etc.

If he reacts badly and is an a**e about it, then you need to get other bodies involved, start keeping a log etc etc.

Make that 315. I might have a diesel car now, but, living in the South West, I'm not driving to Middlesborough!

Is he actually doing anything illegal ? Can you not make noise up until 11 pm ?

As to making noise after that time, I would be unhappy about it aswell. As above, is he aware of the nuisance to you?

If you go in with the right attitude, you may get better results, eg I was in my garage making noise at 10:50 PM. One of my neighbours came over and started mouthing off at me, so she was ignored. If she had simply asked, things would have been different. (I didn't realise the time, or the noise level) So your approach could be critical to the issue.

Always better to get agreement than to call in the 'officials'

    Good luck

You can make noise any time you like... the 11pm rule is a myth... however, if the noise affects someone elses quality of life or causes alarm, harassment or distress then the Environmental Health Officer can issue a noise abatement order and if this is not complied with the noise making equipment can be seized and the noise maker fined/prosecuted.

Knock on his door and ask him to be quiet, politely obviously. At least you can say you've tried when you call the authorities.

Jamie1979, that sounds interesting. Does it mean that when the council come along digging up my road I can ask them to stop as it's causing a nuisance? And then get the noise police in??? In fact every car that goes past my house has the same effect, can I make them all stop???

I'm not being funny, just wanting to know how far this rule extends.
