    Default French Train speed record.

I know it's a train, so it's the most boring form of transport to grace the face of the earth, but you've got to hand it to SNCF. They've 'modified' a TGV and on a stretch of track from Paris to the Champagne region, it hit a top speed of 574.8 kph.

Let's put that into perspective, 574.8kph or if you prefer as I do, 352 mph. On rails. A four coach train, with scientist passengers on a normal, apart from some reinforcement, track!

Imagine trying that over here! Health and Safety, Railtrack, Leaves.....

There's a pretty good video of it on Sky news, if you go interactive.

Incredible speed, too fast for me though, I think I'd spew
Apparently, a japanese train goes a bit quicker, but it's one of the magnetic levitation type.

I watched that on sky and omg that really is shifting. Would not like to think if it de-railed what mess it would leave.

YEah, they're called mag-levs (funnily enough) - they are popular in Germany too, bit like mono-rails.....very quick, quiet and eco-friendly

The only reason we dont have high-speed trains in this country is cos we have the oldest train network in the world and we're only a small country, by time you got to 200mph it'd be time to stop at another station, it just isn't practical...
