Just check that all your hardware (and software!) is compatible. I'm about to buy a new laptop but I'm getting one with XP. Won't be upgrading to Vista until they've brought out the first Service Pack (and more drivers) to sort out the inevitable initial bugs.

Interested to hear what you think of it. Which version did you get?

Stuff Vista. Just removed it off my laptop. Imcompatible with quite a few of my software packages even fooling it in the Compatability setting, too slow compared to XP, IE7 has a few pop up issues, needs rebooting as much as Windows 98 did... etc.... etc.... etc.....

Remember XP was the same when first released with lots of niggles. As D says you should wait for a service pack ideally.

Yep, I did the same with XP. Waited until the initial niggles were sorted and SP1 was released, then went and got it and had no hassles with any hardware etc.

I haven't checked yet - but with having three inkjet printers, a laser printer, a flatbed scanner and a medium-format film scanner connected to my workstation I'm not expecting them all to have Vista drivers from the off - which would be a PITA for me.

thats the very reason why even though we could have had Vista FOC on the new laptop, we went with XP... let someone else have all the hassle with the 'bugs' and i'll see about it in a years time,
