    Default oil consumption too high???

    Hi,

Sorry for the non vec related ques again

I have an astra 1.6 8v 50k on the clock 3 years old.

I've just took it into the dealers with a misfiring/cutting out/running rough problem and apart from fixing the egr they have given me a boll*cking for having to top it up by over 1.5 litres of oil.

Thing is, it had a full service 8 weeks (3500 miles ago) so I hadn't thought to check it yet.

Does this seem too high?? (it doesn't seem to be dropping or burning it )

    Cheers
    Nick

yes, it is excessive... now they've checked and topped it up, see how it runs over the next month, and pay attention to any 'minor' oil leaks...

Did the EGR seize??..if so it may be oilsmoke sticking it shut with wet carbon?..

watch the level, and see if it drops, as there is nothing saying it was right the 1st time round..also what oil grade did they fill it with 5W30 is a bit thin for this engine really...

That sounds WAY high Mate. Are you sure they actually filled it properly after the last service?

i'll see how it goes then. I seem to remember checking the oil after last service - like the day after - just to make sure it seemed clean (been stiffed on that before now!!) and it seeming quite high on the dipstick.

The EGR was actually fixed on a VX rework, although when a friend had a look over the engine a couple of weeks ago and he took the egr valve off he commented on how 'coked' (his words) the valve was.

There is absolutely no oil on the drive where it gets parked and i've revved it to just below redline with not a puff of smoke.

I can't say now as the garage still has the car with the service manual in but i thought it was 10w40 - could be wrong though.
