I can't believe this, a vectra could now be a possible contender for a 17 year old, and i think it might be a wise idea, strangely enough i had oe of these as my 3rd car.

we all know about the vectra 1.8 life? designed to be cheaper, well insurance is only £2900, my lowest finding is a toyota yaris 1.0 at £2400 (i've literally searched through 40+ cars)

i think i prefer my brother in a vectra, also we know them backwards, parts are cheap, and there is plenty of them!

really daft but im also pleased.

Back when I passed in 2000 the cheapest insurance I could get was on a Ford Sierra 2.0glxi. Cheaper than my mates 1.0 106 so I brought one as my first car. Think it's because they fall under the family car bracket.

    Yeah its probably why

But the 400 quid difference compared to a yaris seems worth it

Probably save that a year in Fuel, as he'd have to floor the yaris around to get up to speed!

Defo, and a Vectra is a much safer car for a new driver and there passengers if he has an accident. I know which one I would rather have my brother in.

Buying a car that most 17 year olds would avoid can sometimes be a good idea as insurers won't have any claims stats for the driver/vehicle combination. As in this example, the Sierra cost less than a 106 because loads of young'uns were buying 106s and therefore the claims frequency was higher among young drivers than with Sierras.

I'd not worry about style and put thought into safety and cheaper insurance, Vec would have to be considered, for reasons already stated. My first car was a 12 yr old 1.5 Mk 1 Cortina column change auto (forced into it after a bad bike crash). Insurance will be a PITA till he gets some age and NCB, both of which will take years, no quick way.
