Just got a 1.3 derv panda for my daughter. Basic but cheap fun And a decent insurance group......look at black box insurance. Not only cheaper but takes away pier pressure.

Most cars that you wouldn't expect a 17yr old to drive tend to be the best for insurance.
The Toyota Yaris is (I hate to say it) actually very good and reliable, at 17 the best thing he can do is build his ncb up then after a year or 2 he can then look at buying a decent car.

My first car was a 1993 Ford Sierra 2.0 GLXI when I was 17. It was a beast! lol
My second car was a 1.1 Peugeot 106 and was paying more insurance for this than the Sierra

You looked at the Astra H 1.4??
    Check HERE for upcoming meets/events

we looked at all the normal small cars like the ford ka(rubbish) fiesta, corsa micra panda etc etc but the yaris was the cheapest to insure compared to the others and to be honest well spec'ed and not bad to drive and fantastically reliable cant fault that

Been there with the son and daughter. all i can say is if you mod it in any way that will bump up the ins .as my mate changed the interior on a lupo and the ins didnt pay out when his son had a little bump.
The daughter had a old clio for two years with the black box fitted. And now drives a mini one with no box now.
    Good luck .

the vectra has gone , but not far away so ill still see it form time to time

I'm 21 with 6 points on my DL, passed less than a year ago, with Nikki on there (who had a crash) it's only £1,300 on a 1.9CDTi 150 Signum (with the crash and points declared)

If I was you I'd go on his insurance as SECOND named driver as that MIGHT bring it down, also your misses as well if she drives, that MIGHT bring it down to.... also try boosting up the miles per year, it dropped my insurance down by £150 - £200 depending on who it was with.... Just giving you some tips on how to help....

I had a Corsa C 1.2 SXi when I was 17, insurance was a %$^^$%& on that thing, that came in at £7,400, so swapped that for a (wait for it) Vectra B 2.5 V6 and I dropped at 3.2 V6 into it, got a quote on that with just me on it, £15,000 all but a few pence, put my mum and step dad on it, went down to £5,300, yeah I'll take that, LOL, then my step dad took himself off the insurance and it went up to £26,450........ I dunno how they work it out, kinda dumb, but the MOST I get quoted now on ANY car is £3,000 that's from a 350Z 3.5 V6 Auto (but you have to be 25 to drive one) now with the Signum 1.9CDTi with 6 points driving less than 1 year no no claims, Nikki on the insruance as well with a crash it's only £1,300 :-)
