    Question Antivirus Recommendations?

    Anybody?

I'm fed up with the way Norton and McAfee both take over the computer, I know loads of people have no problems whatsoever and wouldn't move away from one of those two, but I've tried them both, for a year each, and while I'm sure the protection is great, with a package like that installed, it takes the computer almost 10 mins to boot up and be ready to use!!!!!!!!

I'm not particularly looking for freeware, although if there are any good freebies, I'd be happy to try them, but I'm also quite happy to pay a subscription if it's worth paying.

If it makes any odds, I'm running Windows XP SP2 with IE7 on a desktop that's about 3 or 4 years old......can't remember how much memory it's got, but probably not much by today's standards!

    Any suggestions gratefully received

    Thirded!

Just because it's free don't be put off by a perceived lack of support - AVG Free updates all the ****** time!! I log on most days and most days the first thing the pc does is download an update for the virus catalogue.

    Fourthed!

I have used it for a couple of years now and it's always been very reliable.

I have used eTrust Antivirus from Computer Associates which is brill, although you have to buy it, and pay subscription.

If you need anti-Spyware, I would recommend Ad-Aware from Lavasoft, which is free with free updates. Spyware often causes hijacking of your browser, so you have no control over what's happening when you are online. If you have Windows Defender then that's OK.

I assume you are using Windows SP2 firewall, which is fine.

    Wink

Well I use avast! .. its free and picks up a lot of things the others don't and updates regularly. Also use avg but don't have them running at the same time, just the avast. Anti-spyware I use ad-aware and also a couple of others that are included in programs such as the zone alarm with built in protection and a system optimiser that has it on too. Its surprising how much different stuff different programs pick up.
    Very happy with them all
