Default Momentarily Heavy steering 2006 1.9 CDTI

I've been having this problem for a while, I've had the car checked and there is no physical sign of a problem so getting to the point where it's going to be changing parts to eliminate the problem.

It's hard to explain but if you are driving along a sweeping bend the steering will feel as if the power assistance isn't there, then all of a sudden it will be making the wheel jerk because of the force that I'm using to turn the steering wheel. The springs have not long been changed for brand new H&R's and at the time the bearings where moving freely by hand, maybe this could be changed with the weight of the car sat on them, with the car on axle stands the wheels will turn freely left to right with no sign of the problem. Maybe steering rack or pump.

I'll be changing the top mounts and bearings through the week once I am back from a long weekend break to Wales, as this is the cheaper option out of the parts I think could be the problem.

The car has also had 2 lower arms (one last week the other about 7 months ago, droplinks (saab uprated ones) and steering rack ends and track rod ends fitted.

Also had someone mention the Union joint on the steering column aswell but yet to get my mechanic to have a look at that.

Sounds extreemly daft but have you checked the fluid reservoir?
After that as above high chance electric, when it happens does the vent fan speed drop?
The car has a life support system for loss off electrics and fans are pretty much 1st thing to be cut off by the ecu to preserve priority bits like steering, engine etc

Yeah checked the reservoir straight away it was a little low but nothing to bad, I topped it up and since checked a couple of times and the levels not changed. I had the blowers on this morning and trying to check but it literally lasts for a second or 2 but doesn't seem like it is stopping the fans from working. I'm going to change the top mounts and bearings and the UJ when I'm home

Check the electrical plug/sockets on the pump as well - the securing clips on the large connection can easily be damaged and allow plug to become loose and give you a momentary loss of power to the pump - Mine did and the contacts were pitted and burnt where it had been a poor connection

If fans are not cutting In my mind puts blame towards motor or connections themselves.
    Remove plugs n clean up.
It will be either due to motor using more power than can get, or check if only happens on stronger corners as weight shift and happening could be a lose contact somewhere

This only happen on sweeping bends? Both directions, or just one?

I ask as it sounds like a lower bush on the lower arm could be worn, those will cause this kind of 'drifting' on sweeping bends and depending on the type you fitted 7 months ago, this could be on its way out again.

It's hard to explain the problem via text, it will happen most times when starting to turn, for a second or 2 the steering is heavy then all of a sudden "releases" and goes normal.

I had the lower arm that was fitted 7 months ago checked as I changed the other side, my mechanic said it was fine and not in need of changing but I'm obviously only taking his opinion on that.

Did your mechanic mention the possibility of an air pocket in the power steering system?

Had the fluid in the system changed, came out grey, as soon as he put the fresh fluid back in that instantly changed grey too.... I've sourced a rack and pump so just going to get that all changed for piece of mind.
