if it still turns, then yes Ian is correct, but i'm surprised that VX would want to change both if they were'nt happy with their diagnois.. this of course assumes that they know the resistor pack is a seperate item...

As Ian says, the ballast resistor is used to slow the motor down, it's normal speed is number 4, but the resistor is used to slow it down in 3 stages..SO, if the motor was US then it'd just not run.. but if it was the speed controller then it'd only run in position 4...

Do you know why they condemned the motor?..

The motor might be full of rust. It says in the field remedy that the resistor can go in 2002-2006 motors because of a leak that accumulated in the bottom of the motor. The remedy for this is just to drill small holes in the bottom.

i take it thats water ingress via the pollen filter?.. so they now want to drain it into your carpets.....

makes sense why they wanted to change it then....but you should just get away with a resistor pack..

Didn't say where the water would come from just said that different parts are now in production.

I have had water ingress onto my carpet and dod find substantial standing water around the inlet to the filter. I cleared 3 years of the previous owners gunk from the drain and no more water coming in.
Unfortuantly for me, my NQ warrenty expired on 28th Feb! I will try and get the resistor pack changed 1st to see if that remedies the problem, failing that I will change the motor too and I should be back in order! I can agree with you GSI that the motor would not be running if it was shot but vx did WOULD NOT tell me why they wanted to replace the motor and resistor pack, only that it did need doing, but thanks to you guys I may get away with a low cost resistor change!
Thanks guys, will keep you posted!
    Ian.

Thanks guys, I will post a how to as i go through, i'll do a practice run 1st as I pre-emt i may cack it up 1st time but after speaking to parts at moorland motors in blackpool they say it'll be a snatch to sort out! I hope so!
If the resistor pack does not sort the problem, I will try the switch gear (new dash switch £35 from vx) failing that I could change the motor myself as only a couple of torx screws and a couple of clips hold it in place!
Once again, Thanks to all who have helped! I'll be back in a few days with the next problem!
