    confused 2.2 DTi problems....

Hi, im a newbie, got a 2.2 DTi on a 2002plate, the sri version and its playing up....

It had gone into limp mode on random occasions, if you switched off the engine, waited a few moments the car drove as normal.

Im very non technical, so please help....

Basically, it appears that the turbo is not working.... the car is really sluggish in accelorating, and there is a whistle/windy kinda noise when you attempt to put your foot down althought there is some acceloration but it feels very limited.... there is also a bit more smoke than there was before it started showing these symptoms....

    anyone had a similar problem??

Im going to take it to a vauxhall specialist on monday morning, hope to god that its not expensive, but only £20 to get the codes read....

Anyone know how much for a new turbo??

think about £600 plus fitting for a new turbo from someone like 'turbotechnics'..but, as in your other post, check the turbo hoses as they are known for spliting and it will give you these faults...if the hoses are intact tommorrow, then yes, i'd take it to get it's codes read..

confused Thanks for all your help!!

    T

As im not technical, and to be quite honest, i havent a clue where to start looking for these pipes.

could u show me where to look (maybe there is some images on the net that could show me where??) or possibly even describe whereabouts i should be looking?

From what you've said. ive got confidence that it could be these pipes... seems that the turbo is working normally...

Do you think i would be causing damage whilst driving it like this...??

How much do you think i would have to pay to get the pipes changed?

Thanks for all your help... might actually get some sleep now!!

right.. the pipes run from the turbo ( under the big raised heatsheild on the back centre of the engine) to the front of the car where the intercooler is found..there is a big steel hose on top of the engine..but if you start at the turbo ( do it cold) and just inspect the hoses that lead to and from it for any loose clips or splits in them.. and then follow then up from the intercooler to the engine's inlet..they should be soildwith no tears, so if you find anything suspect then you can be confident that is the fault..

you won't damage the engine like this, but i wouldn't leave it for ages to get looked at thou..

changing them isn't a big job, so no more than an hours labour ..and the hoses are about £30 each if memory serves at this time of night...

Sleep sound... if it was a serious turbo fault it'd be beltching out blue oilsmoke, not black soot, which is characteristic of lack of air ( boost problems)..

    Default Sure enough.....

there is oil on the underside of the big pipe coming from the turbo and out towards the front of the engine (pic attached)

is this the pipe/hose that is the one that normally goes???

it's normally one at the front of the engine. but if that one is split it will cause problems.. a little oil on the outside of the pipes is not something to be overly concerned about...

From what you say, I reckon you need to whip the engine cover off, It's literally three star headed screws, give it a sharp tug upwards and it'll be off.

Then as you look at the engine, on the right hand side at the front (just out of your picture) Check the charge hose that goes into a manifold. On mine this actually blew off, causing the symptoms you describe. Also, check that for splits or tears.
