Have you visited the java website? they have a little online tool for updating/checking your java install.

i think its included in quicktime or real player, its one of these you need.
I had similar problems. I ended up having to remove Java via the control panel and then reinstall it from the website.
Just spotted you said you are running Vista ... Assuming it's IE7 you are using:
Tools -> Internet Options
Click on the Security Tab
Ensure Internet Zone is selected and click on the 'Custom Level' button
Scroll down to the scripting Section and ensure the following are selected:
Active Scripting: Enable
Scripting of Java Applets: Enable
Click OK and Ok again to close the settings windows
