Default External Hard Drives - Value For Capacity

Was out in town today & wondered into Maplins. They had a Maxtor 400GB drive reduced from £150 I think to £90 as seen here

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...rce=1&doy=29m3

I nearly picked one up but then thought Id have a look round online first. Does anyone know of any good offers around?
Another thing is are they relaible? I'm dreading the thought of using one to backup photos of my children I could never forgive myself if it goes wrong & they became unretrievable. Can the back up drive "be backed up"? Without going for one of them mega monstor drives which distributes your files over 3 or 4 drives cos I ain't got mega bucks to spend on one!

As above, I just bought a Caddy & stuck my old 80Gb hard drive in it, unless you're backing up movies, 80Gb holds a lot of photos & documents. Personally, I keep the photos on my PC's hard drive & also on the spare drive, photos can't be replaced, anything else can.

If you're looking to save space on your home system, I'd suggest keeping at least 2 copies of your photos elsewhere - probably 1 on an external drive & 1 on Dvd?

So this back up software I'm seeing most advertisd with, is that the same a your recovery software? Or is the back up software just a quick & easy program to use for backing up your data onto the hard drive?
If so how does the recovery software work?

    Try:

    http://www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=957&id=4241

They have some great deals on external drives at the moment, including a 500Gb for under £100.

my experience with hard drives is that the larger the drive the shorter the life, drive failures on anything over 160gb are far more common. You cant go wrong backing up pics to a dvd or use 2 hard drives in your pc and copy to both. If you have xp pro the back up utility "shaddow copy" is included, you can back up any or all of your hard drive. External caddy's available empty from about £10 (computer fair) to £15 online, I agree with comments above, 80 gb is a hell of a lot of pics & docs, you only need 100's of gigs to back up dvd, and why would you !!
