somehow i cant help wonder if the gov solution will be a tax based solution, the faster the bike the more tax you pay to buy and run it, for safety reasons of course.

Now there's a good idea, you should run for government!somehow i cant help wonder if the gov solution will be a tax based solution, the faster the bike the more tax you pay to buy and run it, for safety reasons of course.
I am seriously hacked off with this 'nanny state' government.
As has been said before, if they think a speed restriction will stop people being killed in bike accidents then these clowns are living in cloud cuckoo land, or Whitehall as its known.
These *****s are getting paid a shed load of taxpayers money, OUR TAX MONEY, to dream up this garbage.
I think we should all stay indoors and never go out, and have detectors fitted for everything so we never come to any harm. We will all be able to live to 100 years of age but will die of boredom before we are 40.
Soapbox now being placed back under the stairs!
It'll never happen.
I will put my mortgage on it.
A similar idea was muted and bounced around Europe many years ago. Never came to anything. Sabre rattling, thats all.
Remember the "leg protectors will be fitted to all new bikes" proposals that were being chucked about?. Same again, **** all happened.
I will gladly eat my 990 v60 Mille engine block if it does.
On the plus side, read in MCN today that at long last and quite sensibly, black tinted visors will no longer result in a prosecution.
Neither will small number plates as long as they can be clearly read from 20.5m away.
About time too.
There was a debate on radio 5 live this morning bout this. They were saying about limiting motorbikes & cars. Can you imagine what would happen on a bike when you are accelerating out of a corner & the limiter kicks in . One guy rang in & said that when you first pass your bike test you should be limited for 2 years on a low powered bike. If in them 2 years you have no accidents or convictions you can then get a more powerful bike after advanced training. They also make insurance for high powered bikes very expensive.
They also said that a very high percentage of bike crashes are caused by car drivers not paying attention.
And I am willing to wager my mortgage, once again, on the chance of that particular individual suggesting a 2 year trial period on a lower powered bike had never sat his backside on a bike in his life. Just an uninformed muppet phoning in with an ill informed and contrived opinion.
Exactly m8, hit the nail on the proverbial head there.
Car driver education is the key to reducing bike deaths and injuries, not more state control from the government.
That folks, no matter what way you look at it, is the bottom line.
I have been riding bikes for 18 years now. During that time I have owned many different types of bike all with varying power outputs and performance capabilities.
I have had 1 serious RTC involving another car on my bike in that time. It very nearly killed me. The car driver was entirely to blame from both a moralistic and legal point of view, which was reinforced and confirmed in a court of law.
I have witnessed a good friend die in my arms after a road accident last year ( a serving Paramedic no less, who had attended many bike smashes ), on a group ride out on our bikes, because of the sloppy and innatentive actions of a car driver.
I feel seriously passionate about this subject and it really gets my goat when the blame is even slightly apportioned over to the biker.

The guy who rang in about the two year bit was a biker & said he had a 250 not sure what one now for town riding & a Ducatti Monster play thing
This has been Debated for years apparenty, they ran A trial on restricting bikes - coincidentally the Test Rider was killed due to the fact the bike was resrticted, exact circumstances I am unsure... but It indeed happened
I agree with most of what you said, as a biker myself, but would take a little issue with the above and put it into context. Bikers can and do cause their own demise - exactly the same as some car drivers. We had two bike fatalities less than 2 miles from where I live in the last 2 years. One was a stupid overtake on a blind brow and the other was a lowside on a good surface into the front of a car. Both tragic and regrettable but both also the late bikers fault for riding too fast for the prevailing conditions/traffic. People focus on this rather than the car pulling out in front or turning right without looking or......
Having said that, the "unprotected" biker is a very easy target for any uninformed renta quote to make a few headlines against, and that is what makes me mad - and provoked the earlier rant.......
I don't ride a motor bike, never have and don't really want to. I do understand why people see the attraction of them, I only ride a mountain bike. But here is my 2 pence worth on life
No risk = no fun
I do not want a risk free life because that would be boring. Dying of boredom is not really my intention. You only live once.
The point is not eliminating risk, BUT is all about risk management. These are different things.

I've been riding bikes for around 20 years on & off now and a nearly choked on my krispies when I heard this on the news yesterday. In South Africa, the roads are a messy free for all & biking there is dodgy to say the least, but like Ste says above, we still did it - it's such a pleasure, what is the use of life if you can't enjoy it?
I was lucky to never drop a road bike on the road (I had plenty of off road spills..) but I lost count of the number of near misses I had and they were never due to me belting around at 100mph+, it was always due to cars not bothering to look before performing some kamikaze move.
My next bike is on the back burner due to buying a house, but by next year I'll be back on two wheels & will be posting guides online as to how to remove the limiters!!
Footnote: Why do loads of biker here not use their headlights at all times? It was the law in South Africa - I think it's stupid not too, headlights are there to show yourself to others as well as to see with.
