Acer's are good value for money, but don't overlook HP and Lenovo as they sometimes have some cracking budget laptops (and they tend to be a bit tougher than some Acer's).

The new Victoria 510 range from HP are good (I currently have one to supply to a client and its well built) and the Lenovo 3000 range have proved reliable in my experience.

Have a look at www.laptopsdirect.co.uk for ideas

look at battery life if your using it mobile and try and get about a gig of ram / 100 gig hard drive minimum for a budget of £500. look at dell as well, go for a 6 cell battery upgrade and you should still get a decent one under £500.

Dual core, or Core 2 duo as it's known will show its worth in video editing, games you wont notice, but mpeg conversion etc, its like 2x rapid.
