Default Need to use some experience!!

    Pardon the title!

At the moment I have a 2.2 DTi. It is doing no more than 42 to the gallon on my trip to work, more normally it is about 39 - 40. About 90% clear motorway, the rest into West London.

I'm going to replace it. I want to be rid of any other reliability issues, so am now discounting the 1.9 CDTi, as I think all I'll be doing is buying newer problems. I am not considering anything with a Turbo at the moment, as I'm up to here with them!

So, what is the real fuel useage like on the 2.2 Direct? If it'll do a real world 35 - 36 on a run, without having to drive like a priest (I mean slowly, not past playparks) I reckon I'll probably be better off.

Thinking along the lines of an SRi XP hatch, found an 06 for 12k last night on a website somewhere.

    Hi Andrew

I have had my 2.2 Direct for about 2 months now - it's great.

Typically I will get around the 36-38 mpg but on a good motorway run I can get around 41mpg which for me is fine

    Hope this helps

I have a 'Direct Demon' too and do 80% of my mileage around town - and the computer reads around 33mpg.

At a steady 70/80mph on the motorway the trip comp reads 40+mpg. I know it isn't always accurate - but imo it is very ecomonical for its size and power.

    There is a 2006 06 2.2direct at Lookers in Speke(l'pool) for £9995

Over two years my trip computer showed 34.8mpg. It'll do high 30s easily on a run, 33-34 around town.
Never had a single problem with mine.

I still maintain that there is nothing to worry about with the1.9 CDTi. I have done over 90,000 miles in two different ones and the engines and turbo's have been bullet proof.

My last one was re-mapped to 190bhp, towed a caravan around France and was worked pretty hard and never faultered!!

Go the whole hog and get a 3.2. you will be no where neat thr fuel consumption you are after. but the driving will be great fun though.

Matt, Don't take this the wrong way, but someone once told me the 2.2 DTi was meant to be reliable! I still love the car, but I've fallen out of love with it if you know what I mean. Especially as it's put the mockers on something I've been looking forward to for some time.

Ed, you obviously have a lot in common with my wife, She thinks there is a Gnome in the garden that ****s tenners! 3.2 V6.. If I could justify it returning 22mpg, which in my hands it would, I would!!

And you're right, I would enjoy it too!

Mines is a direct, I do 25mile round trip to work, motorway up to 90ish, and i do a fair bit of nipping around town, typically i've had from 30 to 35mpg, mostly about 32/33. And thats working it out with a calculator after filling up when the trip comp. is reading an optomistic 38 or 39 so I don't trust that. 400 miles out of a tank is my typical benchmark, and a full tank is filling up about 55L so thats jst over 33mpg. And I wouldn't say i thrash it by any means.

Clearly, you wont beat a diesel for economy, and the CDTI 150 for economy with excitement, but diesels cost more. As the CDTI's are relatively new, they are perhaps more likely to suffer from teething problems.

As for petrol, I'd go for something tried and trusted. The old 1.8 (now VVT'd) was bulletproof and gave good service in Astras and previous Vectras. But I assume that you want a bit more oomph than that.

The 2.2 (now direct injection) which gave good service in the Omega, Astra, and Vectra-B, and the 2.0 Turbo are closely related; the Turbo is a development of that 2.2 engine detuned to 2.0 with a turbo bolted on and goes like **** off a shovel with reasonable economy.

    I like the 2.0T as I don't do a lot of miles.

    The choice is yours.
