Default 1.9 150 Diesel - auto or not?

Thinking of moving of to the Vectra side. Fantastic forum with lots of info-more active than the Toyota one!
I've done a search but couldn't find anything concrete so here goes...
I'm thinking of a nearly new Vectra, 1.9 diesel, 150bhp. I've seen some with auto too.
How does the auto box cope with the 150bhp diesel?
And I've read some reports the diesel is slow on take-off-is this just the manual, auto, both? Is it really that bad?
    Many thanks.

    Thanks for the welcome!

If its any help to peoples comments the car I'm looking at is a 1.9 150bhp Elite auto, 3 months old and up for £15k. Is that good value? Looks to be about £10k of list....

Welcome mate, I can't comment on the auto, but standard my manual was surprisingly quick, & also had a nice punchy mid range. Not disappointing at all.

Now I boosted it, it's incredibly powerful for a 1.9, it hurls the car forward & the torque is quite vicious.

Its the same car as me!

I was a bit hesitant about getting the auto box but once I had a test drive I was convinced and bought the car.

I do a lot of motorway and find the car extremely relaxing to drive and because its a six speed box I still find I get good fuel economy.

I must admit that after spending 30 minutes or so playing with the semi/manual shift I haven't bothered using it since.

The auto was also a godsend on Saturday when I was coming home from work, I got stuck for nearly three hours on the M3 because of a crash, normally I get a very painful clutch ankle. This time I had a much more peaceful time and no sore ankle.

    Go for it!

I have an auto 2litre petrol at the moment (Avensis) and whilst I don't mind a manual...maybe I have been converted to auto.

I did a few test drives at the weekend in various cars, all manual. I was ok in those short times and thought why did I really want an auto a few years ago. But maybe doing the daily commute for a week or two in a manual will have me wanting the auto again. Bit of a swing I suppose.

I came from an auto BMW and am not missing it really. When I got the BM I appreciated it when I was stuck in traffic, but felt like I wasn't really in control on the open road.

Gone back to a 1.9 150bhp manual and am loving it. Not been stuck in traffic yet though! It's one of those things I guess, you just adjust to what you have.

I believe the 1.9CDTI is available with the 6-speed auto as well as the normal 5-speed, can’t comment on this box as I have never driven one.
Regardless of what the engine is, in terms of performance there is nothing (ok, it's about 0.1 of a second, so you won’t notice) between a manual and a auto box.
The only disadvantage of the auto, is that it will cost you around 3-5 MPG depending on the engine and where/how you drive.

Haven't driven any vectra so I'm no use to you but the thing that put me off the 1.9 cdti auto was the massive loss of economy.
The urban/extra urban/combined figures are (facelift):
    manual - 37.7, 58.9, 48.7
    auto - 29.7, 52.3, 40.9
    Thats a loss of 7.8 combined !
You might as well get a V6 3.0 cdti auto at 39.8 combined
Some complain that the 1.9 turbo lag causes them to stall the engine when moving off from stationary but presumably that can't happen in an auto?

I've got the manual version but I had an auto as a hire car last year.

It was probably the way I drove it but the only negative was when overtaking the the gearbox was quite jerky (is that a word?) as it changed up.

General driving (Chester to Avonmouth to Brentwood and back) was very relaxed. The engine is certainly powerful enough to handle an auto.
