Default Hand-brake turns.. damaging to a car?

I'm not a boy racer or anything and I very much treasure my motor, but I've recently had a little dab at hand-brake turning in empty car parks.. the addiction started on a snowy day (very fun i must admit!)

My question is.. will the very occasional hand-brake turn harm my car? Apart from the obvious wear to the rear tyres, will anything else suffer? Like i said, I don't want to be damaging anything(!).

you may damage the rear calipers, as the handbrake is really only designed to be a parking brake, i know construction and use regs say it must be able to manually stop the car, but doing handbrake turns will only wreck the calipers, they're quite delicate bits of kit these days....Pro rally cars come with Pro brakes, something the vec isn't fitted with.

Isn't there also a danger of it messing up stuff on the rear axle/suspension/hubs (can't think exactly what) with the more severe side forces you'd incur?

Do they specify how long that should take? I think about a quarter of a mile should be enough.....

Didn't know about the callipers, eeek.

When you engage the handbrake i.e. to park, is it the callipers (the same used for braking on the rear discs) that are being engaged? I'm not clued up on this topic to be honest.

I also thought about rear axel/hubs etc being damaged, due to the un-natural sudden side forces exerted on them.

yeah its the same calipers. You seem to be answering your own question by asking what will be damaged. The car is not designed to do HBTurns so yes it will damage something.

I did a propshaft yoke and an axle pinion in a Capri and a Granada when I was younger, I was obsessed with HB turning, any excuse and up it went, two gears down and away the way I'd just come, with smoke of course, never one to let my audience down you understand.

Ahh, and then there was the poor old escort that endured the 1st gear from reverse while still rolling backwards, that was a complete cog strip in that one.

And a 3.0 Capri auto, that I decided to treat the folks to a true burnout, engage box, foot hard down on both pedals at the sametime, release brake and expect dragstrip tyre smoke.......Ahhh NO!......BANG, another propshaft bites it.

Glad to say I grew out of it, well my wallet did anyway
