    Default AF33 auto gearbox problems

    Hi!

My gearbox seems to have similar problems like in thread http://forum.vectra-c.com/showthread.php?t=8542. When driving in the city, with light acceleration the box seems to hesitate and keep the revs before changing from 3rd to 4th gear. Usually the box works fine with normal or heavy acceleration. Quite often the 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear is changed without slip, especially when slowing down and accelerating again, not "fluid" change in any way (this is very annoying). Some might describe this behaviour like "hunting" of the 1-2-3 gears.

My Vec has 3.2 V6, VIN starting with W0L0ZCF683... and it has gone through GM "customer satisfaction" campagn at 2006 October for cooler: local dealer changed cooler pipes/o-rings, coolant and updated the AF33-software without cost. After the fix, the coolant level indicator warned couple of times and I took my car back to be filled up.

During that time I was not aware that there might be something wrong in the gearbox, but since reading this excellent forum, I now think that I have one of those faulty gearboxes. I do not know how detailled they have checked the coolant pipes which goes into the gearbox, whether there was any traces of coolant. Today I checked the coolant level (cold engine), it's barely in the middlesection of the cooling tank.

I'm going to have the Irmscher suspension kit fitted in the beginning of April at local dealer, so I'm planning to mention about the gearbox-issue at the same time.

    Any advice, how to approach?

i'd check the gearbox fluid for contamination from engine coolant to start with.. it should be a deep red or blackish colour... if it looks like strawberry milkshake then it's got water contamination....the cooler they change is built into the main engine rad it's seals there that fail and give the trouble..how long has it taken for the collant to go down?

if the trans fluid is the right colour then it sounds like actuator valves at fault..

if it's been reworked and has failed again then i'd take it up with the dealers..

    Thanks for hint.

I'll check the colour of coolant tomorrow. Before filling, the coolant went down within one week.

Is there a way to check whether the cooler itself is changed or not?

not really...but if they said they had done it then they will have..

i'd check the colour of the trans fliud really quickly, as driving with contaminated fluid will do more damage to the box..use the green dipstick on the front of the box..

    Thanks again for reply!

Is the green dipstick located under the hood or under the car? (any pics available?) I have never checked the fluid before...

If it's under the car, I think I have to take it to the dealer for check, no possibilites to lift the car..

it's under the hood, look down from the top of the engine onto the front of the gearbox..inbetween the battery and the exhaust header.. you should see a 1" round green plastic head held in on a tab with a 13mm bolt, thats the dipstick...easy to get at really.....no pictures as it's too dark over here at the mo..

Finally, I've checked the gearbox fluid, it was deep red colored so I suppose it is ok.

Might be then the actuator valve... Do you have any idea about the cost of actuator valve fix?
