    Default Trivia

    Im always interestd in where phrases came from. Things we say everyday but dont think about. Ima total sad case but ive found a site that tells you where most phrases orginated.

    for eg... christmas box....

    Churches used to collect money in boxes for distribution to the poor. This happened the day after Christmas Day and gave Boxing Day its name.

    or

    Black sheep of the family;

    Meaning

    A worthless or disgraced member of the family.

    Origin

    Shepherds used to dislike black sheep as their fleeces were worth less than those of white sheep

    anyone got any phrases they want to know about?

    A white elephant......

    White (albino) elephants were regarded as holy in ancient times in Thailand and other Asian countries. To keep a white elephant was a very expensive task, since you had to provide the elephant with special food, and provide access for people who wanted to come and worship it. If a Thai King became, for some reason, dissatisfied with a sub-king, he would give him a white elephant. The gift would, in most cases, ruin the recipient.

    Couldn't they simply kill it or 'lose' it somewhere, maybe down the back of the sofa??

    Problem solved. Those ancient Thai's were a bit thick really.

    The problem was that they were regarded as holy. If you just killed it or 'lost' it you'd probably lose your head!! LOL
