No sigh of loss of compression or gunk in water just an oil leak for me that ran onto exhaust manifold. Head replaced under warranty. How have you diagnosed it mate?

No oil leak slight into coolant top up reservoir and loss of water for several months but now engine cut out no compression and thick sludge in coolant! In garage for head gasket replacement but they are reluctant to proceed think camshaft jumped on chain drive reason for lack of compression. I'm thinking and have thought for some time possible cracked head.

If you look closely at the head they are cast in what looks like polystyrene. Saab on the other dont use this method as it proved to be a bit week. TBH the 2.2 is a solid lump and dont think a cracked head would cause the chain to jump. Could it not be that the gasket has completely gone? Has each bore been checked for compression? If 2 adjoining bores show a drop then it more likely to just be the gasket. Im the only 2.2 that I know that has had there head cracked so its not a common fault.

Your man for this is GSI 3.2, he knows the lump like the back of his hand, might be worth a PM.

Hoping its just head gasket. Personally, think it unlikely chain has jumped, chain still taught - chain more likely to have snapped if camshaft had oil lubrication problem. Garage think compression gone on all four cylinders and are thinking possible bent valves. They are not prepared to proceed because wary of job saying problem engine. Having it taken to another garage.

I take it you have got a vec c and not a b? The chain is a very common fault on the b 2.2 but was sorted for the C with a larger oil jet.

Looks like chain then mate. Oil jet was to small and clogs up. The amount of vec b's and astras that ive seen with this problem is plane just not funny.
