    AFAIK the spring is what returns the mechanism to forward gears after you've used reverse.
    You have to pull the collar up to get into reverse against the spring.

    Here's an XP2 one I bought recently.

    Thank you , so I need to put it back on lol, I will try and fix it with spring and foam if not I will buy another

    I remember I had to glue the gear knob back on
    my Viva 1800 Auto (OBL744L), seems I'll have to do the same again now. Come on Vauxhall engineers (you're bright people) surely things have improved since the Seventies (or maybe not?)
