    Default 3.0cdti question

Has anyone noticed then when the engine is cold the turbo does not spin up until later in the rev range? I have only noticed it a few times on mine and always on cold. Instead of spooling up at 1500rpm ish it doesn't until about 2500rpmish..... Anyone else had this or is it right as its a cold engine?
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Most likely part of the warmup cycle. My DTi is the same, doesn't boost much until it's warm, and sounds really loud and knocky.

The cold idle revs should be slighty higher, so the activation for the turbo is obviously going to be slightly higher

From memory, the cold idle revs is 950 rpm, but once warm this drops to about 700rpm
The turbo activation on cold is probably therefore within the same tolerance ratio

I thought that but its much higher in the rev range, not just a couple of hundred rpm. But only from cold, first thing or if its been sat a while..... I'll just have to see what happens and how it develops I guess.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Today is an ideal test for this, as it is snowing very heavily, so I will compare idle revs cold and hot, and turbo activation revs cold and hold, and then reply later this afternoon

    Air Temperature 3'C
Cold idle speed was about 900 rpm
Went for some short drives on a local long straight road, NSL
The turbo could clearly be heard kicking in at just over 2000 rpm
I then allowed the engine to warm to 87'C, normal running temperature, then returned to the same road and repeated the test
Hot idle speed was about 750 rpm
The turbo could clearly be heard kicking in at just over 2000 rpm

To be quite honest, I don't think it made any difference whether it was cold or hot
What I did notice was the overboost range was different
The overboost was kicking in at about 5500 rpm on cold, and about 4000 rpm on hot

    Surely that's a typo?

    No, not a typo
The turbo kicks in at 2000rpm
As you lift the revs, in the same gear, you can feel the overboost which surges a further 20 to 30bhp
It does seem to vary depending on engine temperature, probably not to stress the engine whilst still cold

The overboost doesn't kick in until higher revs, as the turbo has lost most of its power by this point
